My
Sister's House is a non-profit ministry in East
County Area established in 2004 by Becky Coleman.
It is a safe home that provides shelter,
education opportunities and assisted childcare
for women and children in transition.
The mission of My
Sister's House is to be the stepping-stone into a
new life for women and children who need stable,
secure and safe housing. My Sister's House
provides an opportunity for growth in knowledge,
wisdom, and discernment.
The
story behind the ministry
In the fall of 2003 Ms. Coleman took a
personal retreat at Menucha in the inspirational
Columbia Gorge near Corbett. During the wee hours
of the morning God gave her a vision for a home
for women and children in transition. She got up
and prepared for my morning jog knowing it was
still dark outside. She put a fleece before the
Lord praying "God, if this vision is truly
from you, and I believe it is, bring me back from
this jog and I will run with it to make it a
reality." God brought her back and has been
faithful to point her in the right direction,
make contacts with the right people and receive
lots of encouragement along the way. My Sister's
House opened its doors in the fall of 2004.
Goals
The
goal of the ministry is to have every family able
to be self-supporting and life-skill confident
upon leaving the program to permanent housing. So
many houses and apartments stand empty, so many
women and children need a safe place to get their
feet and hearts back to God's path for them.
Assessment of current steps taken in each
category and what is available at My Sister's
House will be done upon entry to the house. Each
woman will be asked to complete a goal sheet in
the following categories:
- Careers -
job fairs, job skill refresher courses,
job search
- Living
arrangements - ready to rent class,
budget planning, living skills classes
- Relationship
with child - daily opportunities for
interactions, schedule routine, cozy
reading/game corner
- Church
Involvement - daily devotions, weekly
church attendance, bible studies
- Parenting
Skills plan- hands on parenting classes,
support groups, M.O.M.S
